Vision For Youth Statement on our World Cup Trip to South Africa
As of the Vision For Youth board meeting of January 2010, we regrettably have decided to cancel our involvement in the World Cup 2010 youth missions trip to Durban, South Africa. After much prayer and consultation with trusted friends and others who are quite knowledgeable about the circumstances surrounding this particular trip, the VFY Board of Directors has decided not to proceed with our organized trip to South Africa for the World Cup outreach. Again, this is a regrettable and disappointing decision, but it is also the decision that we believe God led us to make. Among the key factors leading to this decision were the escalating costs of flights to South Africa from the United States and the considerable costs of renting local transportation while we were to be in South Africa. There was also the matter of the great difficulty of even securing group tickets from airlines servicing South African cities from the United Sates during the World Cup. After much discussion and many conversations we believe that God has closed the door for VFY to still lead and administrate this trip.
We came to the definite conclusion that for the reasons mentioned above (as well as other significant factors that we did not mention) that it would not be wise for us to continue the preparations for taking American church youth groups to Durban during the World Cup. These matters have raised the projected costs way beyond what our churches can handle for their youth groups.
We offer our sincere apologies to the team of pastors, churches, and missionaries in the Durban area for letting them down in this manner. We truly believed in the great potential of this trip as we worked together with them for many months in preparation for this combined World Cup outreach. We are praying much for our friends in Durban as they change their plans to go in a different direction for outreach during the World Cup. We’ll also be praying for them to reap an amazing harvest for God’s glory during this unique time and opportunity for their neighborhoods, cities, and country!
VFY will continue to work specifically and individually with the American churches that were planning to go with us to the World Cup so that they each have an effective and profitable youth missions experience this coming summer.
